Course of studies

We recommend you to take PIL101 before PIL102. To get admittance to PIL103, you must have passed both PIL101 (or HPE101) and PIL102 (or HPE102), or have qualifications assessed as equal by a faculty at the University of Gothenburg.

Next course

PIL102 at the Faculty of Science and Technology will be offered next time in autumn 2026.

In spring 2026, we offer a faculty-independent PIL102 course in English, aimed only at those who don't speak Swedish. PIL102 is also offered in Swedish at three other faculties.

Description

The overarching aim of the course is to develop the course participants' ability to analyse, plan, debate, and design university education and the own pedagogical approach based on research and proven experience.

The focus is on the organisation and planning of courses and modules. Contextual factors, goals, content, learning activities, teaching, evaluation, assessment methods and university students' independent studies as well as the impact of the choice of course design are included in the course. These topics are highlighted from different perspectives and the relationships between these are debated. Particular attention is devoted to the course syllabus document.

About course certificates

PIL102 is a certification course. All course meetings and assignments are mandatory and require attendance. In some cases, it will be possible to submit a supplementary assignment that corresponds to the meeting or assignment missed. To be approved for a certificate, you must also achieve the learning objectives in the course syllabus.

Information for doctoral students

Have you taken PIL102 as a compulsory course in your doctoral studies? When you have received your certificate of a completed and approved course, you should hand the certificate to the person who is the administrator (or equivalent) for your doctoral studies. That person registers the course as approved in Ladok for doctoral studies.
