Supervision and Generative AI
A seminar in English with Elizabeth Olsson.
The use of generative AI (genAI) applications by students during thesis writing presents new challenges for supervision. Supervisors often work with several students at once and are not always aware of how students approach thesis work. The use of genAI models can make it even more difficult to understand how students are engaging with key parts of the process, such as developing research problems, identifying and reading sources, and writing their texts.
This seminar supports thesis supervisors in responding to these developments. We will examine how genAI applications are currently used by students at different stages of thesis work – from initial idea development to reading, drafting, and revision. The focus will be on helping supervisors support students in making informed decisions about the use of these models, while focusing on learning, transparency, and academic honesty.
By the end of the seminar, participants will:
- Have a better understanding of how students use genAI in the context of thesis writing
- Be able to initiate conversations with students about the risks, limitations, and trade-offs of genAI use
- Develop strategies for supervision that promote critical thinking, ethical engagement, and effective writing support
The session includes discussion, practical examples, and opportunities to share supervisory experiences across disciplines.
