Podcasts for teaching

On this page you will find information and tips for those who wish to use podcasts in teaching. You can also read about the PIL Unit’s recording equipment, which is available to all teachers at GU.

Why start podcasting?

Podcasts have, over the past decade, established themselves as a powerful pedagogical tool in higher education.

  • In 2023, almost half of Sweden’s population listened to podcasts, according to the Swedish Internet Foundation’s survey The Swedes and the Internet. Among those born in the 1990s, 8 out of 10 listen to podcasts, and listening among those born in the 2000s is increasing. In other words, podcasts are a format that the majority of our students are familiar with and have a relationship with.
  • Podcasts give students the opportunity to listen to the material when and where they want. This creates a flexible learning environment, where students are not tied to fixed times or locations. Students can also listen multiple times to revise and deepen their understanding of the content.
  • Podcasts can contribute variety to teaching, which is a factor that supports learning (Elmgren & Henriksson, 2015). The format also allows opportunities to pause and reflect in a different way than lectures do, which is also beneficial (ibid.).
  • Audio as a format, where many people listen through headphones, can create a more intimate and personal experience. Podcasts that are produced in an interesting and dynamic way, and that allow room for personal and informal perspectives, can help increase student engagement.
  • Getting started with podcast production is technically easy, and even with modest resources there are excellent opportunities to create advanced and creative content that captures and maintains listeners’ interest.

Supervision – we can help you with your podcast

Are you and your teaching team considering starting to work with podcasts in teaching? Or would you like support in developing an ongoing project? PIL, in collaboration with one of JMG’s experienced audio teachers, can offer supervision in the different stages of podcast production – from idea development to implementation and post-production. The focus is on content, format, and pedagogical value based on the specific conditions of each course and teaching element.

Register your interest by contacting Emil Östlund. Please specify the course and the teaching activity where you are considering using podcasts. If you already use podcasts, write a few lines about what you do today and what you would like support to develop further.
